~ Do I need art experience?
Absolutely NO art experience needed to enjoy the process of Art4SelfCare. The arts can rekindle the profound creative resource within you, where you discover new aspects of yourself which leads to new thinking and personal growth. You are reminded that the outcome or product of the art is not important, but rather it is the process of creating the art that provides meaning. Therefore artistic ability is unnecessary—all you need is the ability to respond to images, colors, and body sensations.
The art offerings are accessible to everyone no matter your age or art skills.
~ What if I don't like painting, but like to write?
The foundation of this innovative approach encompasses all the arts (visual art, poetry/journaling, music, drama, and movement/dance). Each art form informs or deepen our experience. One client may be more inclined to write poetry and from there create a collage art piece. Another may feel the need to move their body in dance then write a poem. I will provide individualized art offerings that will meet your needs and desired goals. So you will feel comfortable expressing yourself in the art medium of your choosing.
~ What about art supplies?
We will start by using what you may have available such as: scissors, glue stick, magazines, crayons, pen and pencils. In addition a few art materials will be suggested, although not necessary. E.g.: oil pastels, watercolor paints.
~ Can Art4SelfCare be helpful for depression and anxiety?
Yes, expressive arts is a valuable tool to helping individuals with depression and anxiety. For many voicing our suffering can be very painful. And there are times when we really do not have the words to express our pain and suffering. However, the arts gives us an opportunity to express our emotions non-verbally as well as verbally. Thus you will feel safe and supported as you learn new coping skills, have greater empathy and acceptance as well as achieve creative problem-solving skills.
~ How does online Art4SelfCare work and what are the benefits?
Arranging for complete privacy in your home with no disturbances from family, friends, pets etc., you will experience the freedom, comfort and control of your environment.
Online Art4SelfCare is done on Zoom, a similar platform to Skype. Zoom is user-friendly and easy to set up on your computer. In order to have a good visual session it is best to use a computer screen, not a mobile or tablet, as the screens are too small. Also it’s important to know that sometimes today’s technology could have disruptions and communications may fail. To ensure there is no break in the therapeutic connection we will connect via telephone call rather than video. Your preference as to whether you call me or I call you will be discussed beforehand.
